“Manga” are Japanese-style illustrated novels. The subject of this research thesis is the highlighting of their design value, the revelation of their charm and their course in the world. A detailed analysis is carried out of the elements used to capture meanings in a two-dimensional, fixed and silent form. Emphasis is placed on the methods of designing characters, which are the main subject depicted in manga, while the historical origin of the morphological elements of the medium is studied progressively, as well as their transformation into animation. The thesis then examines the psychology of the humans in relation to manga character illustrations, with eroticism as the main focus. Through this information, the emergence of many elements of the Japanese culture occurs, which have strong influence on the character designs and subject matter of manga, as well as the product industry that concerns their audience. Considering the journey of manga around the globe, the interactions between the medium and the rest of the world are mentioned in various fields. Their domain expansion to other countries is presented, with a special emphasis on Greece, through their influences from and to Western productions, the art of painting and music. Many aspects of the Japanese culture are growing by reaching increasingly more people, with the design of manga that forms them being fundamental.
