In this research, the main topic is the documentation of the traditional tools, Mr Manolis Zorzos, one of the two sons of a famous boatbuilder Mr Yiannis Zorzos, has inherited. The main goal of this research is the listing of the image, the name, the usage and the material of the tools, such as the way they were made and the workshops that were involved in the making process. Diderot, once said in his researchs that you would be very lucky if you could find ten people in a thousand, that can talk about the tools and the machines they use or the pieces they make. The oral testimonies, Mr Manolis Zorzos and other craftsmen give us, make a clear vision and give us details about the tools, the wooden boats, the boatbuilding yard, such as the traditional boatlbuilding process and the manufacturing in the whole island.
A living traditional craft, wooden boatbuilding is a very important part of the sea tradition of Syros and was involved in the financial and cultural development. The boatbuilding yard and the boatbuilders are the only things that keep this craft alive. The loss of knowledge in which the current status leads to, due to the implicit way this special knowledge transfers and the decreasing number of craftsmen, is unavoidable. Due to this research, we can comprehend the worth of this whole construction industry, the importance of the special know-how and we can acknowledge the network of gnosis it occurs by travelling a boat like a piece that contains knowledge. We can, also, get aware of the reasons that lead to stop the manufacturing process and the disappearance of the whole production system, the professions, the special vocabulary, the tools and in the end, knowledge.
