This paper is a research into the history of the construction and illumination of St. Foteini church in the archeological site of Ancient Mantineia by the architect and painter KonstantinosPapatheodorou. The peculiar structure of the temple was the reason for many controversies in which the local church, architects, painters, journalists etc. were involved and which were publicly released in the local and Athenian press. Eventually, these disputes led the artist to an unusual censorship of himself and, after much pressure, he reconsidered the original illuminated scheme of the temple. Studying the corresponding arthrography and being influenced by the studies of KonstantinosPapatheodorou, who apprenticed to FotisKontoglou, GiannisTsarouhis, DimitriosPikionis and others, there seems to be an effort so as to keep track of the controversies and explain the choice of the artist to build an indeed odd-looking complex of structures(since “Frear” and “Heron” have also been built there). All this provoked an intense debate regarding both the order of St. Foteni church and whether the mosaic and the murals were suitable to decorate a modern orthodox temple or not.
