The public space, and in particular the public urban space, includes all the elements of the city which are accessible to the general public, such as squares, open spaces, streets, parks, libraries, etc. Apart from its material existence, it is the place where people meet in order to satisfy their various needs and desires. This means that the public urban space fulfills different roles at the same time, which gives it multiple identities: it is the field of public life, the field of social interaction of people, the field of expression of multiculturalism, the field of collective memory. People and social groups claim it for the satisfaction of their desires and in their effort, they identify, cooperate or even conflict. The aim of this work is to investigate the transformations of public urban space over time, through its claims by its various users. The object of the work is the pedestrian street of Iktinou and Zeuxidos in the historical center of the city of Thessaloniki. The research was carried out through the study of publications in the local print and electronic media. According to the results of the research, the pedestrian street of Iktinos and Zeuxidos, a space with a collective memory identified with the schools of Iktinou Street, was significantly transformed in the last years, due to its claim by various social groups. From a place of spontaneous meeting mainly of young people, today it is a place where the table seats of adjacent leisure shops dominate, while at the same time the collective memory of the place has weakened.
