Isn’t easy also kind of boring? Nowadays, the image of a playground in a typical Greek city is a synonym for conventional. It is a specific set of colorful equipment made, only to be used by children in a fixed manner. it is not elaborate, and it has mobility restrictions that don’t allow children move freely . Risking while playing at a young age is important but unfortunately, there is a misconception about the meaning of risk, and it is often wrongly related to danger. Was it always like that? This research passes through different architectural examples of equipment and play spaces that redefine the meaning of risk. The research begins after the sudden overbuilding in Greek cities. The outdoor places where kids played decreased so has spontaneous play. Afterwards, the search passes through Europe of WWII where kids used to play in bombsites creating the first “junk playgrounds” and then the stable metallic or traditional equipment from the 50s and 60s. Finally, while, now more than ever, restrictions are induced, material technologies have developed. Architecture leans into moving parts that can be constructed in any place from the children themselves.
