Athens 1930,a city that gives little evidence of the present day
Dimitris Pikionis, architect, professor at National Technical University of Athens
14th primary School, Pefkakia, an inovating building, symbol of modernism in Greece
In Athens at 1930 D. Pikionis, who teach at N.T.U.A. the evolution of traditional architecture, undertakes the architectural design of 14o Primary School at Pefkakia. Those days, Athens was mostly consisted of one or two floors buildings and dirt-roads. At the same time G. Papandreou, who was the President of Greece, made constant efforts to europeanise the country, similar to «Venizelos modernisation». The school at Pefkakia which was created under the programm of the Ministry of Education, was a modern building designed by an architecture, known for his occupation with local traditions, D. Pikionis. In this research project, the architecture, the condition of that time, the school and a serie of D. Pikionis documents that can be seen as parts of the school’s «calendar», are getting investigated.
Is it a school that is still up-to-date because of its story, or because of the architecture’s designing of D. Pikionis, which satisfies the architectional and educational needs of present day?
