This research project's goal is to investigate the relationship of the body with its surrounding space through the study of Rudolf Laban's work. The concept of space and concepts related to it are defined by a choreological perspective, i.e. the science of dance. The approach followed is closely related to the study of the human body's mechanics and its fundamental laws, while the research focuses on the basic following questions: “How does human body movement affect the space around it? Can it affect the way architecture produces space for the human body? And finally, can architectural space be constructed in such a way, so to manipulate human movement or transfuse to it more possibilities?”. In other words, the foundation for the formulation of a proposal on another view towards composition and design with experimental and body criteria is created.
On a research level, we focus on the kinesphere, a theoretical construction- tool devised by Laban in order to analyze, investigate, record and mold the infinite possibilities of human movement. Thus, from an architectural perspective, a turn occurs, from the bigger scale of designing thrοugh various viewpoints -through the glance- to the scale of body dimensions and possibilities. A turn that seems to approach more a design that gives importance to function, with the difference being that other qualitative criteria are introduced.
Finally, this essay's aim is to put forward that part of Laban's work that relates to the understanding of the body's possibilities, to record it briefly and with clarity for the general public and to find a common space between the arts of dance and architecture. Namely, to investigate the components of dance science that have practical application and can be incorporated into architectural design, thus creating a new tool for design.
