My research work, was carried out under the guidance of Prof. G. Tzirtzilakis, and is titled “Performativity of clothing, fluid identities as means of conciliation”. In this research I deal with the concept of performance and the performativity of clothing. I begin by citing historical events about the garment that mainly refer to the 18th and 19th centuries and relate to the conceptual connections of the sight of garments with the prevailing social conditions of each period and the inflow of personality into the public space. In the second unit I enter the sphere of gender discussion, from which the concept of performativity has been promulgated. Considering the gender performativity as a tool, I am making an effort to define the performativity of clothing, as well as to emphasise the urgency of gender recognition as a mechanism for restraint and release from the modern subject. In the third and final chapter I refer to the association of modern fashion with antiquity, trying to identify the trigger that causes the incessant variations of fashion. By seeking dynamics of the act of clothing, I turn to the Vetements, which is one of the most discerning fashion brands of recent times. Passing through the design and presentation qualities of the Vetements, I call their outfits “clothing piles” and I briefly analyze the main design directions found in them such as amorphousness, fluidity, and non-compositional presentations. Trying to trace the connection between modern appearances and general existence in public space, I come to recognize the need for fluid identities as imperative; it is the one that will give us the most open possible state of “being”.
