Recently a new philosophy of outdoor public lighting began to develop so that it becomes more efficient, economical, eco-friendly to natural environment and collaborating with the architectural environment and having as a goal the materialization of the "Smart City". Nowadays we expect from outdoor lighting much more than the possibility to see at night. The road lighting has become a necessary tool not only for the safety of pedestrians and drivers, but also for criminality reduction. The new light sources SSL and more specifically LEDs, have offered new ways and possibilities to the construction of "Smart Grids".
In the present research an initial attempt is made to the concept of "Smart City", and how it affects the modern cities and especially the "Smart Grids" and public lighting. As a conclusion, in this research, is the design of luminaire, which answers to all requirements of modern design, having as a guide the future city and sustainability.
In the first section of the research the basic knowledge of photometry is offered, along with the lighting characteristics, the definition of basic photometric quantities and their units and the operation and characteristics of different lamps used in road lighting. Lastly a comparison of their efficiency is mentioned, in addition with a full analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of LED.
In the second part of this document, a try is attempted to define the "Smart City" with the combination of definitions from all around the globe. Also the main characteristics that they have to acquire in order to achieve their goals, are presented and analyzed. Furthermore the paper, focuses to the role of public lighting and SSL technology in the smart city and raises some questions about the adoption of LED lighting.
The third and final section, is aimed to the lighting analysis of the luminaire. Firstly the requirements of ΕΛΟΤΕΝ13201/2004 are defined and the technical and photometric characteristics of the "Folium" are presented. The end of this report comes with the questions and the conclusions that came up during the research.
