What is it that determines whether a certain space is likeable or not to a person ? What feelings are created during the experience of the space? Which process (psychological-natural take place in the human mind when it is trying to conceive a certain space? How do spatial conditions affect the activity of people in a certain space, the prosperity of these people, their performance in different daily activities and job duties?
The investigatory project tries to investigate the possible answer to the above questions through the study of psychological, philosophical and architectural approaches and valid scientific research on the preferences of people in real time and space or different models from the view of natural light, contact with the external environment and the models which interpose between inside and outside.
Natural light is responsible for a person’s sight , it lightens the surfaces and it help us realize the shapes and the space .The conditions which light creates with the surfaces and their shadow create the “atmosphere” of the space , set limits between interior and exterior environment as well as private and public areas. In addition ,natural light and its 24-hour, monthly and annual changes , affects and adjusts man’s activity, sleep, health ,stress and generally his prosperity.
Natural light of an interior space is achieved through openings. The windows and their shade systems adjust the amount of light which is to penetrate inside. The size, number, order the orientation of the windows influence the conditions of comfort and the users preferences.
Moreover, the windows affect contact with the exterior environment, as is it important for the perception of the area beyond the closure limits of the formation of the building. The content of the view, mainly the visual contact with nature and the distance of the perceptible exterior stimulations- pictures-shapes are criteria for preferences.
Usually between interior and exterior environments there are element-patterns-(whole foundation of building, shape systems) which change the interior and exterior perception of the space and form either more or less desired atmospheres, due to the shape and the morphology.
Seeing that all the theoretical approaches and the research have been understood, in the last part of the investigatory project, an experiment on the preferences of views in an office setting is being done.
