The comparison of human life as living in an illusory environment dates back in the ancient times. Plato’s parable “Plato’s Cave” constitutes a characteristic example in which the philosopher compares the real world (World of Ideas) with the world we live in (World of Idols).
The illusory/constructed realities in the movies
Dogtooth (2009), director Giorgos Lanthimos
The Phantom of Liberty(1974), director Luis Bunuel
Castle of Purity (1973), director Arturo Ripstein
that I chose to analyse are in crisis.
Each time, the cause of the crisis is the gap between the known and the unknown reality, yet these three movies present different types of restrictions. The Dogtooth and the Castle of Purity describe restrictions that were imposed because a person chose them, in the scale of a house. In Phantom of the Liberty, social life and taboos create restrictive conditions for the inhabitants of organized societies. These limitations are placed by the citizens and result in getting back to them.
In this research paper, the connection between authority and architectural space is revealed. It is inferred that space is a constitutive part of the construction aiming to achieve its creator’s goal, which influences the behavior, habits and life of the inmates.
Finally, Dogtooth is a film that can relate with the current economic crisis, as it is considered to be a political movie of the year 2009. Moreover, the plots of these films lead us to underline the importance of the subjectivity of the choices regarding our everyday life, which can remake aspects of our reality.
CRISIS
from the greek word ΚΡΙΣΙΣ, which means:
Α. 1. opinion, estimation, evaluation 2. choice, selection, preference
< ΚΡΙΝΩ >
Word analysis: stem κριν- + suffix -σι- + -ς > κρίσις
The Latins borrowed the word (crisis) and then it also became an international term, eng. (crisis)
