FAILURE AS REFLECTIVE MECHANISM IN CONTEMPORARY ART PRACTICE

Biography

Born in 1978. He graduated with honors from the School of Fine Arts, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2003). He participated in the Erasmus program in the University of Barcelona (2001). He graduated with honors from the MFA program of the School of Fine Arts in Athens (2006). He graduated and was honored with the Paula Rhodes Memorial Award from the MFA program of the School of Visual Arts, New York, USA as recipient of the Fulbright, Gerondelis and Al.Onassis Foundations scholarships (2009). He participated in the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture(2009). He is a current PhD candidate in the School of Architecture, University of Thessaly. Since 2001 he has presented 8 solo shows and has participated in more than 50 international group shows, residencies, and projects in Greece, USA, and elsewhere. He received commissions to create site-specific installations in many institutions and Foundations. His artworks are part of many public and private collections. Articles and reviews for his work have published in many Greek and international media.
He lives and works in Athens.
 

Research interests

Exploring the concept of "failure" in contemporary art is the core of the thesis.The term “Failure” includes a huge number of concepts such as erroneous, the unfinished, random, the unexpected, the impossible, the helplessness and even a huge list of conditions primarily determine the failure to reach a specified target. Reinforcing the importance of the theoretical and practical target, the dissertation will attempt to explore new, alternative, unexpected ways opening finite, ranging from the ideological position on broken promises and non ontological emancipation as regards the involvement materiality of the artistic production. Basic search field of research is determining the processing mechanisms that occur in the project production process, conditions presented during the period of implementation. The starting point of the present work is the assumption that failure refers to a situation in which the artistic practice (the project method of production) can not bring the desired results to approach the specified target.
The analysis of failure and the coupling of the untargeted condition i the data collection and analysis field to determine the causes that led to deadlock situations. This thesis using a range of methods to examine the cause or causes of the failure determines the process of analysis and definition of the switching objections based on the collection of components that interrupt or disturb the mental and materialization process of the project.
To organize such a decoding research is conducted under a research collection, archiving and unraveling of Intrinsic and extrinsic factors that influence the conception, design and implementation of Art project. The research focuses on two main areas:
1) Natural or artificial events inline dissolve the content and modifying structures and situations are the "platform" on which to collect any form of "matter" through observation, quote, and report the incident. The conclusions arising through juxtaposition and critical discussion of the facts and events that mutated the evolution of a process or sometimes Misguided decisions of authors and the institutional framework within which produced each project and incorporate their sense of "creative destruction."
2) Works of art and wider artistic practices "intentional" are not aimed at a "teleological completion» (on going activities) is the field in which investigated possibilities for a "another order" worldview of direct target procedural sequence with a focus observing the "new project" undoubtedly-foregone after each compulsory or deliberate shift.
The research field through this prism focuses on project and practices of a "randomness methodology" Projects that mainly have the ability or desire to use it as a constitutive element of their content intercalary interference of any type or follow strategies endless procedural sequence without oriented target not defined its area and untargeted or crystallized guiding path.
