The word voyage suggests that someone leaves a familiar and known place in order to face the uknown. The traveller is the person that leaves a point of origin so he can arrive somewhere having always the possibility of never returning back. He travellers until the point of arrival, completening in that way the circle of the destination. The only thnig that one can expect from a journey is that it will bring “the other”, the unecpected, something unfamiliar. Through otherness and series of unecpected events, a voyage can sometimes bring a sense of adventure or sometimes just something strange, peculiar.
But this is not about any journey. I left Lisbon on 29.08.2012 at 11 a.m. Alone, with very little money and without a clear destination in mind or a specific deadline, i decided to travel through Europe.
I wanted to travel this way but also experience it for certain time, not out of need but from choice. Wanting to wander by chance from city to city and get to know places that were uknown to me, i rapidly discovered the impossibility for one to travel without any sense of destination, for he would propalby end up chasing his tale. Even chance includes desicions, sometimes by choice others based on instinct.
So i created three basic rules so that i could decide where to go, how to move and where to stay.
1. HEADING NORTH
2. HITCHIKE
3, NO HOTELS
All together, i wandered through sixteen cities, eight countries in thirtysix days. I covered almost tree thousand km. I was hosted by 13 people, two squats and my tent.
Through my research i am not trying to describe this trip, maybe not even myself. However, all issues rised came from personal notes that i obsessivily kept, memories and thoughts that came after.
