This research, named «TALL BUILDINGS: exploring the metal structure body», is an attempt to understand the tall building and how it redefines the urban habitat. Man always tried to overreach the standard limits and overcome his nature. These ambitions had as result the construction of great achievements, such as skyscrapers.
There was always a connection between architecture and the structure of the tall buildings. During the 19th century their construction was highly improved. Using steel as a building material and the invention of the elevator led to a new path beyond the limits. History has proved that metal used in constructions, as well as the development of tall buildings are inseparable.
Studying structures through history brings out the fact that their symbolic value consists a main point of this research as they affect the balance of the urban environment. Designing skyscrapers is one of the most important ways to attract public attention. They completely change the scale and the perception of the cities giving a unique urban characteristic.
The subject of this research is to study the structure of steel as a building material in tall buildings and generally in the constructions. Analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of metal constructions and comparing them to these of conventional constructions, we try to understand and end up with the best choice for the structure body. But which is the best solution? Can we find the answer by choosing just one path or are they both necessary?
