In this research we tried to approach the concepts “public” and “private”, particularly in a spatial context. These concepts are not “tight”, but instead their content is “fluid”. There exists a gray zone between them, which cannot be identified as purely public or private. Concerning its spatial characteristics, this gray zone could be either more private or public, meaning that it includes both elements, to a greater or lesser extent each time.
In the course of the analysis we realized that the boundaries between the concepts “public” and “private” are obscure and an interpretation that would go beyond that dipole would be more helpful, in order to approach the current social reality. “Commons” is the notion condensing this meaning and its medium is “multitude”.
This theoretical construction serves as a methodological tool in order to approach a parallel construction, which consists of sketches that explore the gray zone between “public” and “private”. As a result, the sketches sometimes mostly refer to the first notion, sometimes to the second, always remaining in the interim gray zone. “Multitude” is used as a component of the sketches resulting to a series of observations related to the creation of space where common action takes place. The abovementioned approach results to the application of its elements into architectural programs enriching the «classical» architectural programs.
