"This Will Kill That"

This Will Kill That explores the relationship between books and buildings, largely through the AA School’s own publications programme and its journal AA Files, and argues that we should increasingly question the necessity of always revealing architecture in published form.

The department of Architecture of the Thessaly University is organizing a workshop on the theme of passages in town. The passages are parts of the city and architectural pieces. They organize our daily journeys. They often provide a highly sensitive and symbolic experience.

Shortcuts declined in crossroad piercing the urban tissue or line formed by the desire by the foot pressure on the grass, they are used to connect spaces and functions, to cross barriers, and to intervene on the city quickly in its interstices. They refer to an imaginary of public spaces (literature, film, architecture, arts). They are significant in a culture and in a society. Whether physical or symbolic, passages create the identity and the qualities of the city by punctuating the urban grid with unexpected spaces.

The workshop will try to answer two questions:

• What are the remarkable passages of Volos?

This question refers to a set of events (exhibitions, symposiums, architectural competition, short movies competition) organized on this topic by the Institute La ville en mouvement (http://www.passages-ivm.com/en). It is then to propose a similar event in Volos for which participants can contribute to the creation of a worldwide passages inventory that will part of an international traveling exhibition. Thus, part of the workshop will be to describe the most remarkable passages in Volos for their submission to the online inventory. (http://www.passages-ivm.com/en/passages)

• What types of architectural and urban evolutions for creating new passages in Volos in 2015?

Thus, the second objective is to make proposals on a series of public passages in Volos for their creation, their development and/or their preservation.

All student productions will be gathered in the form of a portofolio to testify thoughts and share them with other cities around the world working on this theme.

Le workshop will be supervised by

Theoklis Kanarelis, Professor,

Constantinos Manolidis, Assistant Professor,

And Nicolas Remy, Adjunct lecturer,

teachers at the department.

They will welcome for this occasion, Magali Paris, teacher-researcher at the National School of Architecture of Grenoble, landscape engineer specializing in Ambiances and in the place of Nature in cities.

Workshop «Passages», 18-22 Mai 2015, Département of Architecture, Université de Thessalie, Volos, Grèce

Theoklis Kanarelis, Professeur

Constantinos Manolidis, Professeur Assistant
